What is an Earthquake?

An earthquake is a natural geological phenomenon caused by the sudden release of energy in the Earth‘s crust, generating seismic waves. It is one of the most destructive geological disasters. As tectonic plates continuously push and collide against each other, rock layers fracture and shift. The accumulated energy is released in the form of seismic waves that travel to the surface — and that is when an earthquake occurs.
